What is Phototherapy?

Phototherapy is a treatment method used to reduce high levels of bilirubin in a newborn’s blood. Bilirubin is a substance produced by the liver and is usually excreted from the body. However, some newborns have a surplus of bilirubin, leading to a yellowing of the skin and eyes, known as jaundice. Phototherapy uses light waves to break down the excess bilirubin so it can be easily processed by the baby’s body.
